How We Started the Independent Living Association for the Disabled in Malaysia
The Independent Living Association for the Disabled in Malaysia was founded with a vision to empower people with disabilities to live independent and dignified lives. The journey began when a group of people, including people with disabilities, came together to address the challenges faced by the disability community. These challenges included limited access to education, employment, and public spaces, as well as societal stigma
To make this vision a reality, we initiated discussions, conducted community surveys, and partnered with local NGOs and government agencies. These efforts highlighted the urgent need for an organization dedicated to promoting independent living through advocacy, education, and support services.
The initial focus was on raising awareness about the concept of independent living. Workshops, seminars, and public campaigns were conducted to educate the community and policymakers. We also launched a pilot program that offered personal assistance services, peer counseling, and skills training to enable individuals with disabilities to live independently.
We have played a key role in influencing policy changes, such as implementing universal design in public infrastructure and improving accessibility to public transportation. Today, the association continues to be a force for change, striving to build a society where people with disabilities can live with dignity, freedom and equality.
We remain committed to breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive Malaysia. Today, we continue to advocate for policy reform, expand our services and foster a society where all people, regardless of ability, can live with dignity and freedom. This journey reflects the power of collective action and an unwavering belief that independence is a right, not a privilege.
